MeJean Chartier
President of the Commission d'accès à l'information
In December 2010, the Québec National Assembly unanimously
appointed Me. Jean Chartier as member and Chair of the
Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec.
As Chair Me Chartier is responsible for the oversight and
management of the Québec body in charge of the protection of
personal data in the public and private sectors and with
ensuring access to documents held by public bodies. As an
administrative judge, Me Chartier renders decisions on
requests for the review and examination of disputes that
fall under the Commission’s jurisdiction. He also provides
opinions within the context of the Commission’s supervisory
and control division on access and privacy.
Me Jean Chartier was called to the Québec Bar in 1982. From
1982 to 1990, Me Chartier worked in private practice in
Québec City. In 1990, he joined Le Directeur Général des
Élections du Québec, including serving as Director of Legal
Affairs until 2006. He participated in several electoral
cooperation missions in Africa.
Me Chartier was a Professor at the École du Barreau du
Québec from 1990 to 2006 and a course lecturer in political
science at Université Laval.
In 2006, the National Assembly of Québec appointed him as a
member of the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec.
